Great shot Kathy! You've conveyed the challenge of the game wonderfully, as he looks like he's contemplating his next move. I love that it's in b&w!

I like this shot, the composition looks great, and the young boy's concentration is captured, the only thing that looks a little out of place is the first porn, the DOF, falls short, he seems to be focused on that one, that's why I would have like to of seen the porn also sharp. But, still a great image. #31076

Hi Cathy, Carol and Ray! Thank you each for taking the time to comment! Ray, I hope you are talking about Pawns, not porns! LOL! I was going for the shallow dof with the pieces oof, but now that I look at it through your eyes (Pawn, not porn right....??) I see what you are saying....I'll try it with a smaller aperture next time! Thanks again! #31090

LOL, you are so right Kathy Pawn, not porn. That's why I drive in nails for a living. #31148

Kathy,
I'm a serious chessplayer as well as a photo buff and have tried lots of variations on this shot. At such close range it's almost impossible to have the pieces close to the camera in focus, even with a small aperture.
But I don't think that really hurts the picture since you really want to focus on the chessplayer here. I like it as it is.
