I found this little bird in the middle of an empty lot (from a recent home's deomolition) in Pincrest, FL. I had stopped to take some pictures of the wild flowers growing in the rubble on the east side. Having done that, I was walking across the lot when this small object caught my eye. The bird had ruffled it's feathers as a warning to me and I barley avoided stepping on it. I have never seen this type of bird before and have lived in South Florida most of my life. I'm not sure if it was injured or not but it's beak seemed deformed to me and I found it odd that is was just sitting in the middle of this open lot in the midday sun.

Well Michael my friend again I can come to your rescue. This wonderful little bird is a Killdeer. It lays it's eggs in rocks just like this with no lining in the nest and hatches them right out in the middle of everything. They are the cutest little babies and walk most of the time like roadrunners. The mother will also fake a broke wing or injury to lead a preditor away from the nest.

One time we had one build a nest right in the middle of our employee parking lot at our restaurant. We had to make the employees avoid the nest until the babies hatched. The mother immediately takes them into the tall grass as soon as they hatch.
