Hi Jim,
Such a fantastic photo! It's a perfect choice for the "Where in the World?" quiz in BP's monthly PhotoFlash newsletter.

Hi Everyone,
Have fun guessing where this photo was taken. Jim and I will be checking in from time to time over the coming days, but won't reveal the answer until next week ... so keep guessing! :-)

Hi Everyone,

There were lots of interesting guesses. I didn't think anyone would guess correctly, but Steve Bilton did. It is Mt. Semeru in the Bromo Caldera on the island of Java. This is about two hours from where my wife is from. This was taken in 2002 when I shot medium format film (the Mamiya RZ 67), and just when the mountain emitted this plume of ash I was changing film. Needless to say, I was extremely upset that I was missing it. When I was finally ready, the winds -- which were ferocious that morning -- had blown the column of smoke off to the side and it was still intact. I was very disappointed that I missed the event until I saw the results when I got back to the U.S. and had the film developed. Now it's one of my favorite landscapes.

Jim

P.S. Want to try something interesting? Go into an Starbucks and ask the employees if they know where Java is. They sell Java coffee, but I'd be surprised if more than 2 people in 100 know that it's even a place. #6803631
