This photo of a Royal Tern returning to it's group after a successful fishing trip was taken on Miami's South Beach. There are many wonderful birds out there including the Black Skimmers in the foreground which I will be featuring in future photos. I took this hand-held shot sitting in the sand maybe 10' to 15' from them. One of the biggest challenges I face out there is with my camera's focus-mode settings and limitations. There is a trade-off between what I need for stationary captures vs. catching them in flight. Most of my shots of the birds are while they are standing but one will literally just drop out of the sky into my scene occasionally as did this one here. To capture one like this requires a lot of patience (and trial and error). I really enjoy just sitting and observing them as the scene is as peaceful and beautiful out there as you could imagine. Hope you enjoy it!

Well, your patience paid off here. Isn't it great with digital, when you work the trial and error method? I do that all the time, and come home with lots and lots of pictures in the camera.Gail R. Schuett February 26, 2008
Michael..this is a great capture!!Nikki McDonald February 26, 2008
Like Gail I love the detail and the light showing through his wing and tail feathers. Great clarity in this capture. I don't think I'd have had the patience you did, but it was worth it. #5558872Michael S. Lazarus February 29, 2008
