High Key Pelican

Uploaded: October 02, 2004

Description

I was panning shooting pelicans coming in for landings. They would arc in a 'C' direction against a background of dark green trees and then land on the water lit by the sunset. There were several exposure stops difference and I have no graduated filters, so I was trying to keep up changing settings as I panned and shot. I was behind here and left if high key, but thought it was kind of cool, and liked it better than the properly exposed shots. So I thought I'd enter it to see wha

Hi everyone! I just got back and all these comments are so nice to come home to! I really appreciate it!

And Lisa - the high key exposure did come from manual exposure - although as a mistake - I was trying to get a normal exposure so the water would show up as panned, LOL. Here's what happened - I was trying to practice on some tough exposure shots while panning because this often happens with the wildlife action shots that I love to shoot. On the landing approach, the pelicans were either against dark green trees in the fading light of day or the water with the sunset shining on it. So there were several exposure stops difference and I was trying to practice keeping up with the dials while I panned. Some of the shots from this evening turned out okay, but on this one, I couldn't keep up changing the dials quick enough, so it ended up overexposed/high key and I thought it looked cool. But I wasn't sure what other people would think of it, so that's why I posted it for feedback. I may even try to overexose some panning shots in the future to see if I end up with anything presentable. But I did crop it to pano and cropped out another pelican on the water that I had panned through because I thought it was distracting. I also adjusted levels slightly to punch up the orange of the beak and legs some. I'll attach the original for your comparison. Thanks for the feedback everyone! Have a good one! -K #818188
