A dragonfly, Donna. This is a species, that can typically be found along the edge of woods, in open places like stone quarries or moors.
This one took me about 20 attempts!

OH my,I am embarrassed now! I think that it was too early while I looking at this... I actually have close-ups of these insects too!! The dragonflys here are colored a bit differently though.They are bright green and florescent blue. I know that they don't stay still for long. This must have been a very difficult task to get so close, that quickly! Wow, Now that I know what it is, it deserves a WOW and GREAT job! #20539

The late afternoon produced these warm colors.
Ruth: I always use a tripod or, as in this case, a beansack to have the camera still. This really makes the difference. Tripods are clumsy with dragonflies, you are too slow with them. A beansack or other sort of pillow can help. One thing I ought to mention is that the DOF with a digital is always greater than with a normal macro lens.

Donna: We have these colored ones too. I posted one yesterday. I made a series of about 100 pics this spring with a large dragonfly hatching. The foto I attach is a PS arrangement of a scan of this series.
