Adrian - El Guayabo, Chincha
August 22, 2005

Adrian was playing soccer with a rag ball when I met him two years ago.
He immediately stopped the game when he saw me getting out of the car
and asked me if I wanted to photograph him. I said I did, but that I wanted to talk to him first.
His beautiful big eyes mirrored the blue skies and the trees of El Guayabo, the small community where he lives,
but there was also a certain sadness in them which I wouldn't have liked to see.
Last month, an earthquake destroyed most of the houses there and today I wonder what he felt at that moment,
how he is now and if I will ever see him again.
I really hope he is fine and that the next time I travel there I will see the blue skies reflected in his eyes again.

It was Adrian's eyes that compelled me to open the thumbnail and view the image more closely, Cesar, so I can well understand your feeling that they mirrored not only the outside world but also his interior self. The slight angle you have chosen for this composition and the directness of his gaze make this beautiful child even more appealing. I, too, hope that he is safe. #739420

You've captured an emotion of sadness that is world appealing, Cesar. Wonderful photo! I teach about earthquakes to 9th graders in VA and I don't know if they can even imagine the aftermath of such a catastrophic event. I do hope Adrian, and the people of El Gayabo, are doing well today. #4798280

I am just as moved by Adrian's eyes today as I was when you first posted this wonderful portrait, Cesar. Making it my favorite this month though your flowers (esp the sunflower) were tempting as always. #7115828
