Michael, congratulations on your award. Your photograph is incredible. Everything works from the way you composed it, your choice of field depth, lighting, color - everything worked so well together giving this common object a very beautiful and uncommon presence. Well deserved win.

Congratulations, Michael, this is beautiful! Love the golden tones. How do you make a picture like this? Are the oof water droplets in front of the clear ones or behind? I would just love to learn to make a picture like this. Take care,

I second what Ursula said. I was wondering if you used a special filter or just how this effect was achieved. Thanks! #602076

Michael Khoury June 18, 2004

Ursula, Jo Ann...nothing fancy here; just going through some dewy grass one morning just after sunrise with natural golden; with some good attention to DOF and geometry, I took this shot.
Note, the larger circles distant dew drops effected by a fully open aperture.
cheers,
Michael #603687

Ursula I. Abresch June 18, 2004

Thank you, Michael, you make it sound so easy.

I guess I've been wondering about this for some time, and haven't figured it out, so here it goes: about the out of focus dew drops that show up as circles (at full aperture), yours are a nice and even circle. When I try the same thing with my camera (an Olympus c5050z), those same out of focus circles look like small doilies, not nice and even at all. Sometimes the out of focus points look five sided and not circular. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

The question: how can I get nice and even out of focus circles? Can I with my camera?

Anybody? #603762

Michael Khoury June 18, 2004

Hi again Ursula,
I am really not familiar with lenses other that what I have been using...a 105mmNikkor macro which I used carefully at the shallowest depth of field as I crawled through the wet grass. The effect of the dew drops at different distances from the in focus blades of grass simply always shows enlarged clear 'circles', never blurry. What I like about this effect is that it also enhances perspective and depth of atmosphere.
