Description

I liked the patterns created by the late afternoon sun and the reflections of buildings and foliage on the surface of the wading pool in the City Hall square here in Toronto. Taken with my Olympus C-3020Z.

No, Robert, the patterns weren't created digitally. I upped the brightness, saturation and contrast and cleaned up some unwanted specks with Photoshop Elements, but I didn't do anything else to the image. I used ISO 100 and F 4.0 with an Exposure Compensation of -.3 when I took the shot. #9935

I did not mean to suggest that the photo was created artificially.
I was purely amazed at the patterns and their "unreal" looks.

I am absolutely sure that this is the "real" picture that you have taken, without any weird digital manipulations.

It's probably because I am not a native English speaker and sometimes I might get clumsy with the words...

Oh, Robert, I'm truly sorry if you thought I was somehow offended and felt "accused" by what you'd said. I wasn't at all. If anything, I was pleased that you thought I was artistic enough to have been able to create that kind of design! I wish I were, but unfortunately for me, I'm not. I was the one who didn't make herself clear. All I was trying to do was to indicate that I hadn't had to do anything artistic to get this picture. I love looking at water when the sun is shining on it. Almost always, and especially when there are boats or birds in the water and trees and/or buildings around it, there are really interesting patterns to be seen. My camera seems always to need to have some form of exposure compensation in those situations, but it doesn't seem particularly fussy about which other settings I use (for example, "p" or "a" or "scene").

By the way, there's nothing at all wrong with your use of English.

Thank you very much, Piper, for your kind comment. Ouch, I'm really not communicating well at all lately (lol)! This picture was taken with a digital camera (the Olympus C-3020Z). What I meant by saying that the patterns weren't created digitally is that they were there in the picture I took, not added later with software in the editing process. After the mess I've made of communicating in this thread, I'll bet you'd never believe that I taught English Lit. and Comp. up until last year! I'm beginning to have a hard time believing it myself!(lol) #10115

Ditto ouch. My mistake. I guess what I meant was that it looks like a PhotoShop creation--purely digital--at first glance. That this is straight from the camera--any camera--makes it more wonderful. Don't be so hard on yourself. The English language doesn't translate very well in type alone. I'm constantly putting my foot in my mouth, as my meaning is usually lost on the majority of readers... :) #10117

Ronnie, other people have found these patterns strange, too--but that's just how the water looked that day. The patterns are probably refracted reflections of the buildings and people and birds that are around this wading pool (in which, by the way, wading is forbidden). The same area serves as a skating rink in winter. #81262

Gerda, this image is WONDERFUL!! I'm glad to find that I'm not the ONLY shutterbug who walks around town looking down at the ground and the street!! Do you get weird looks from people when they see you photographing "something" with your camera pointed downwards?? The expressions on their faces look as if they're saying "What ARE you doing?" You really DO have some great photos posted here, keep up the excellent work. #89443
