Bear-ly Escaped

Uploaded: January 21, 2007

Description

Sunrise, Ansel Adams Wilderness, Inyo National Forest, CA. This is just a few hours' hike from where I shot "Summer Freeze". Just a few miles away, but the lush vegetation and complete absence of snow and ice made me think that this was taken in a completely different country. The night before I took this picture, I was awakened at precisely 11:18pm by a bear sniffing my head from outside my tent. People keep asking me for pictures of the bear, but I was too scared at the time to have the presence of mind to take a picture, let alone figure out how to operate the camera. When I was awakened, I looked up and saw through the tent's screen the bear above me. I quietly grabbed my Leatherman all-in-one tool, and ever so slowly opened it. Opening the tool's blade required too much movement/noise, so I left it open at the default tool--the pliers. If worse comes to worst, I figured I could use the pliers to pinch the bear's nipples..(continued in photo discussion)

Opening the tool's blade required too much movement/noise, so I left it open at the default tool--the pliers. If worse comes to worst, I figured I could use the pliers to pinch the bear's nipples---I bet that would hurt! I stored everything that has a scent (food, toiletries, etc.) in a bear proof canister 30 feet away, but I think the bear smelled the chocolate drink I spilled earlier on my fleece jacket. I did wash it off, but I guess the bear's sensitive nose picked up the scent anyway. Luckily for me though, the bear eventually lost interest, and went on its way. Whew!! #591705
