An impressive image and structure, Mike!
I enjoyed your gallery, our interests seem to be similar in many ways. I enjoy trains, barns, bridges, sheds and most outdoor scenes. #434070

Wow Mike your composition and choice of shutter speed is right on here. Beautiful dam and bridge and you really captured it well. #2721949

Thanks Bill, your comments are always valued. It took a lot of walking around before deciding on this comp. I took some others but they did not capture the feel and size of the dam like this one did.- Mike

Wow! This is a great image! Jen #2765005

Mike Rubin May 15, 2006

Thanks Jen, I hope to be able to get there in the summer and fall to capture it with leaves on the trees, Although I think the brown trees compliment the dam colors. #2769030

Ann Kittelsen June 25, 2006

I agree, the brown does compliment image but I would love to see it with fall colors too. Great shot. I love old bridges and dams, make great shots. All your shots are really great work. #2947884

Ann, Thanks for taking the time to view my gallery and for the comments. When I shoot it in the Fall I will be sure to post it, Although I think the many colors on the trees will take away form the Dam, I'll find out this Fall. #2948288

Hey Mike,

I doubt that the colors will take away from the falls ... to me ... this shot is almost monocromatic ... but not quite ... look at the thumbnail ... see how the hill has an orange-ish hue ... imagine that intensified.

I was camping at Croton Point when I saw this image in your gallery and I so wanted to go find it ... but DANG ... the heat! the humidity! The only thing New York has over Texas in that week was that I could still breath here. In Texas ... at least in N. Tx there's no rain when it gets that hot and humid ... so ... because of the dust it becomes something like trying to breathe clay.

Now, I'm north and over on the Harlem Rail line so it's more of a challenge to get over there ... BUT ... as soon as it cools of just a little bit more ... and the trees change color ... I'm taking my new camera on a field trip!

Race ya! (Oh don't worry ... you still have the better camera and much more expertise.)

have fun,

NY State is beautiful, enjoy it! The Dam is located on Route 129, in a state park. #3182876

Thanks for the directions!

When I wrote that, I was thinking, "I will have such a hard time deciding when I will neglect this area for that area ... but I'll have to if I want to see the Hudson dressed in color. And I really don't want to miss that!"

And I also want to go back and get some good shots at Croton Point. It was just simply too hot when we were there to do anything but leave for the library. Do you know that everyone thinks Croton Point has only ever been a garbage dump? But I got the real scoop from a librarian ...

Which got me to realizing something ... when photographers know an area's "secrets" by knowing its history ... hmmm ... suddenly we take another step away from snapshots.

You are right ... NY is beautiful ... and I am enjoying it so much ... I'm seldom homesick for Texas ... (Oregon? What's Oregon?)

... and then I'm also hearing that I need to travel 5 miles to CT as well.

Glad you're back home!

have fun,

A truly fantstic capture Mike! It is extremely impressive! #3306598

Mike Rubin September 14, 2006

Thanks Allen, I was thinking of re-shooting it w/people in the shot to give a sense of scale. I just need to convince the family that it would be worth getting up early for a 1 1/2 hr ride, to get it in the right light. #3310426

Pam M September 22, 2006

LOL I hope you get there ... you do realize your family is starting to be in line for martyr recognition.

Do you know that the Croton Harmon Train station is having an open house before they replace the old "shop" ... whatever that means ... it sounds like old buildings coming down and new ones going up to me ... but the Open House is on Oct 14 from 10a to 3p and then there's also suppose to be the ability to take a Fall Foliage Special train ride up the scenic Hudson ... to where I don't know ... it doesn't say. ...

surely there's something online ... brb ... NO I can't believe it. ok well ck the mta.info site and it's obviously the metro-north hudson line. there bound to have something up sooner or later or you can contact them.

have fun,
pam

Trains AND foliage! What can be better?
Thanks for the info, the foliage part should keep the wife happy!
How is NY life? #3347036

Pam M September 23, 2006

I am loving it still! Although I know I'm still a Texan, every time the temp drops below 64, I'm cold! Yeah I'm cold a lot already! But the people here are friendly, never hesitate to have conversation. WHich of course we can see how I'd fit right into that culture aspect, right?

I forgot to mention ... according to the "Mileposts ... A Publication for MTA Metro-North Railroad Customers" Sept edition, all of the above activities are free.

I'm fairly certain we won't be going because we're shipping my dog in the weekend before ... and yeah ... she can be a brat when adjusting to new places. I'd probably be punished for leaving her. But we'll see.

Did you know that dogs are allowed on the metro north? HEY! WAIT! I'm thinking all wrong ... we don't have to take a bus or taxi from the Harlam Line to the Hudson Line (as usual) we could just go into Grand Central and come back out. But then there's the tour ...

hmmmmm I think I'll drop a note to MTA. Let's see dog for me ... and what else ... oh yeah how far will the foliage trip go.

have fun!
