Beautiful image, Mike!!! Great composition! #2630470

Mike Rubin April 10, 2006

Thanks Amy. It took work to get this composition, The plantation was closed and I was limited to a parking lot and a partally opened fence leading into a service driveway for their reception building, which is where I found this view. #2630513

Hey Mike ... mmm well my first thought when I popped your image open was "SO why am I STILL stuck inside a city?"

Love it of course ...

it does need about a .7 clockwise rotation ... I know the door on the house on the right says the image is straight ... but the mill is leaning a touch ... just use the distortion tool on the building's door after you rotate the image.

and mother nature is not conspiring to provide you with a non-noise filled scene with all of the bare limbs sticking hither and thither ...

It looks like there's already a very few, very small leaves on those twiggy tree trunks that shoot up right in front of the mill ... if you're really able to control your time and travel, you might be able to snag a shot when they have more young leaves on them.

I think you might go nuts trying to clone the twiggy limbs out so I'm not even suggesting it ... besides if you can grab another shot when there's more greenery you'd also have less fringe up in the upper left corner.

As to the lighting ... you know I'm a sucker for sunset shots ... love the gold tones mixed with the blue hazey ...
Sigh ... I hate saying all this when it's such a beautiful spot in this world ...

As near as I can tell between my eyes and equipment, you've done an admirable job with the exposure ... but ... mmm ... if I were you I'd try to reach Protacio and see what he has to say. (Yeah he's still into photography ... been in several gallery shows ... but life is no piece of cake for any of us.)

Soooo ... you are aware that you're starting to have a running theme in your images right? I personally am very fond of this theme.

have fun,

Thanks Lynn & Pam. I always learn something from your critiques Pam. I will be visiting this site again, even if it means a 1 1/2 hr drive (one way) when I am not working. Up dates to follow, It is on my list along with the Church. Re: Running Theme, I enjoy capturing old buildings,I work on the road and always have my camera w/me. Unfortunetly full sun is not the best for photography, I was lucky I passsed the Old Mill at 5:30pm.- Mike

So Michael, Is it Michael? I have this habit ... all Mikes are Michael... ... Anyway does this come under the heading of "Be careful what you wish for aka whine about": On Wednesday my husband interviews with a company in Tarrytown, NY. ... Yeah ... no joke!

Well ... so ... I'm not sure what to say ... I'm fairly stunned. I laughed almost out loud today in church this morning when I suddenly remembered how envious I was of your surroundings ... And I sobbed tonight when Billy came home with the $1000 gift we needed to accomplish the plane ticket.

I couldn't think of a better place to shout it out than from the place where I first really fell in love with NY ... the place where I first thought ... "well maybe it's true ... maybe NY can be tolerable." Yes, Yes. I know you don't live there ... but you accidently gave me some sort of hope that there could actually be a few good days for me there. And no, It's not an absolute done deal ... but then this morning I couldn't see how we could even consider the deal. #2796536

Well ... and further more ... I've been thinking about your image here for weeks because one night I was reading a book (not about photography or design!) and my ADD kicked in and I realized two things ... but then my ADD kicked in again and I couldn't remember to tell you ... until this morning.

First ... if you want to really confuse people ... take a ladder and see if you can get a different angle on those trees.

Second ... the only time the sun set due west is about in April ... at least on certain lakes in East Texas two summers ago. And on July 4th it's so far to the NW that it's almost in the north. And the sun takes soooooooooo much longer to completely disappear. (In the winter it's sun at horizon, then poof! In the summer it sun at horizon in gold, below the horizon in hot pink, deep purple, lavender, soft soft blue.) That means that if you go back in the summer, you will have a completely different lighting situation. If my perspective on this is right, you should have the sun almost in front of you but behind the trees.

have fun,
