Hi Jim,
Wow, what a beautiful scene ... and a beautiful photo! In fact, this makes a great "Where in the World?" selection for our PhotoFlash newsletter.

Have fun, everyone, guessing the location of these Mystery Falls!

Thanks,
Kerry

Wherever these falls are, they're beautiful. My first instinct would be Seven Sacred Pools in Maui, HI. I am just not sure the colors are quite right for that location. However, those are my only falls knowledge, so I will go with that. Good luck everyone! #2610685

Hm... Looks like the falls near where I grew up. Could it be Kent Falls in Kent, CT? #2610906

A beautiful picture! Just a wild guess based on vegetation would be in Oregon along the old Columbia Gorge highway. A second guess would be on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. #2611088

Hi Jim! ... Perhaps it's not fair for us to answer this one since we were with you when you took the shot, but our notes (actually, Sylvia's photo of the sign pointing to the falls) tell us it is a photo of Purakaunui Falls in Purakaunui Falls Scenic Reserve, South New Zealand. Is this McKenzie Falls, Victoria, Australia? Looks quite similar.

Wow, New Zealand... I thought for sure this would be in the Willamette National Forest in Oregon. Beautiful image! #2611324

If this is not within 5 miles of my home in Sacramento, CA...I wouldn't have the slightest idea where they would be!! lol:)
I DO know it's absolutely BREATHTAKING! Now I know it was taken in New Zealand...SUPERB! #2612111

I think it's the bottom of Multnomah Falls, in the Columbia River Gorge (as an earlier commenter suggested) in Oregon. #2612578

Oops, shoulda read the whole message string before I responded. So, it's good to know I only have to travel as far as Oregon to see beautiful scenery similar to New Zealand's. #2612587

Falls Creek Falls. #2613044

My guess would be the Flamingo or Wynn in Las Vegas. They both have beautiful nature areas in the desert. #2616155

As long as guesses are free, my guess is that it is Ocho Rios in Jamaica. #2616543

Excellent! Kudos to all for such good guesses!

And the correct answer is...

New Zealand!

Yes, Dick and Sylvia were with me but I also noticed a couple others got it right. Great job!

Regardless of where you find falls like this to photograph, here's the trick: overcast or shade. Avoid shooting them in direct sunlight, and use a polarizer or ND filter to darken things so you can use a slow shutter speed.

Way to go! #2633953
