Description

Monarch Migration
Because we had a rainy summer, by August my giant zinnias were six to seven feet tall, and the butterflies and bees loved them. One day I decided to try to photograph the flowers from below. I lay on the ground on a beach towel at the very edge of the flowerbed and took a few pictures. I almost immediately saw that I might get one with a butterfly on the edge of its petals; then I realized that I MIGHT get one flying from flower to flower . . . and that became my goal. I went out about every two hours with different lenses each time. Finally, in the late afternoon when the butterflies came back the thickest, using an 18-70 kit lens, and with the camera on Aperture, burst mode, I got a couple of good series. This is from one of them.

I tried another in September, a vertical, but it didn't get anywhere :)
