Gentle Giants in the Surf

Uploaded: December 01, 2005

Description

These unusual looking beasties are West Indian Manatees, also known as Florida Manatees. They are never seen on land, so seeing them in the surf in a mating herd was an adventure. The female goes into estrus, and many males come and go for a couple of days. This was in Fort Pierce, Florida. The pictures have been used by several Wildlife conservation organizations. These gentle vegetarians, harm no one, but are daily injured by indiscriminate boating.
