Description

The Gothic cathedral was designed to drive the eye toward the heavens. Nowhere (OK, maybe Amiens) is this more apparent than the Kolner Dom. It took literally centuries to be completed, and it is remarkable that it was spared in WWII -- the Dom sits proudly and unmissable by the Hohenzollern Bridge. But the structure, while damaged, remained sound, and it is still there for us to enjoy — tall and proud. Its twin spires and the crowns of the three kings (who are said to be in the gold reliquary) are the symbols of its city, Cologne, Germany.

Jo Ann and John, thanks. I am a cathedral nut. To me, these great churches are the aspirations of the people of the time, translated into glass and stone. (Not all those aspirations were heavenly -- a lot of power plays and "my cathedral is better than yours" going on. PS if you want to see the cathedrals at their best, go in winter. Not as crowded and the low light of the Northern European winter is so gorgeous. #11412144

This is beyond belief and can understand why it took so long to complete when you look at all the amazing and beautiful details. And it does what they wanted, it takes our eyes up to a heavenly look. The colors are stunning to. What a beauty. Loved the story behind it to. #11412225

Thanks, Debbie. Sorry you didn't get a chance to go in. Some of the choir windows were covered in plastic, so views toward the altar/choir were not so photogenic. I used my 24-105 walk around lens at 24 and tilted up. #11412383

Thanks, all. I would have loved to shoot from the front of the altar, but there was plastic over a significant number of the choir windows. Not pretty. But probably necessary. These old structures need a lot of maintenance! #11429359
