Shooting through the arch for about twenty minutes, and flashing a light in twenty
second bursts five times.

I used a big flashlight. Actually,
it doesn't take much light to bring out
the color and features, but waving it
around evenly is important. Every
exposure looks a little different,
and it takes practice to find the timing.

Thanks everybody. I seem to be the
last to know that this is a POTD.
The exposure is a stack of three eight
and a half minute files, so it's twenty
five and a half minutes, with about
two minutes of flashlight swept over
the arch itself. The stack technique
is easy, but requires a good tripod.
Basically, it's layering in Photoshop
using the Lighten blend mode. Much
less noisy than going for a single
twenty five minute shot.

This is called Skyline Arch, in Arches
Nat'l Park, Utah. I had to have an arch
that faced north and that could be reached
on foot in the black of night. This
beauty answered my needs and the walk
wasn't more than about three tenths of
a mile.

Thanks for all your responses. next
time I'll take a smaller flashlight.
I had to hold it over my head in order
to avoid creating shadows. I had
a six pound multi-purpose utility light,
and it was brutal!
