Elegance and Decay

Description

A former Vanderbilt mansion on Long Island, built in a Spanish/Mediterranean style, features many decorative wrought iron appointments throughout the property, particularly on the exterior. Here, a railing turns the corner on a terrace staircase, the stucco walls beginning to show cracks and some crumbling in places. The ironwork here is by Samuel Yellin, who spent 12 years of his career designing and producing fantastic wrought iron for Washington National Cathedral.

Thank you all very much… It was interesting to see this house's iron, elegant and simple; so very different from the massive, beautiful, extremely complex iron at the Cathedral. #11077700

Ahhh, this is life. Heart-rending image, Chris, beautifully presented. Interesting description, but the image itself and what it represents really touches my heart today. Beautiful details, tones, and finish... and isn't that what we all want-- a beautiful finish to this wonderful thing called life. :o) #11614700

Chris Budny level-deluxe June 27, 2017 1

Thanks, Joanna -- a nice blast from the past today! I'm glad you like it -- it was a fav of mine as soon as I was done editing -- funny how simple stucco and iron can become emotionally evocative, but I totally get what you're saying! It has a bittersweet, nostalgic sort of feeling to it, I think. A big part of that is of course the condition of the aging stucco, but also the elegance of Yellin's design -- a simple, "Home Depot" plain railing on these same stairs, I don't think would carry the same weight. #11614709
