This is something... how did you get that orange color? with filters?
You have wonderful work in your gallery, will take some more time one of this days to comment.

Thank you Dawn, Gaby, JR and Susana.

No filters Susana. Nikons render sunsets very warm and orange. The only PS work was tone curve adjustment to bump up the saturation/contrast due to deliberately underexposing the scene a bit. Here is a link to the original untouched image so you can see the difference. Tone curve just brought out all the orange already in the image.

thank you Heather, nice to have a so complete answer. I saw the original and then saw other photos, some I recognised from you, wonderful photos...
i have tried to get this beautiful and bright effect (bright for a sunset shot...) and never got something that pleases me. Will do something like you´ve done here, maybe will get something good.
Cheers from Portugal #143063

Your welcome Susana. The long focal length and 2x converter help to also capture stronger colors of sunsets it seems. The type of sunset also makes a big difference. This sunset occured after a hot (87 degrees) and very humid day. These types of conditions tend to produce very orange sunsets here in Michigan. #143066

Roseann E. Dreasher July 15, 2003

I like this version much better than the original...it's fab! #143073

Heather K. McFarland July 15, 2003

Thank you Roseann. I strongly believe that over 90 percent of all digital images must have tone curve or levels adjustments applied in order to bring out the tones and dynamic range that our digital cameras capture in the originals. These are our most important digital darkroom tools!! #143079

Roseann E. Dreasher July 15, 2003

I agree! The first adjustment I make in Photoshop is the levels and contrast then usually play with the hues...so much to do and so little time to play! #143081

Susana Matos July 15, 2003

just great this exchange of opinions! I agree with you, at least I often do a PS adjustement. But I know I have to learn a lot more about photography.
Nice to have all this information, I have a photo with a sunset, will post it maybe tomorrow, if it looks good after some PS treatment.
Cheers from Portugal and I have to say this is what makes this site enjoyable -lots of chat with nice people.

Patrick Campbell July 18, 2003

Very nice (as usual) Heather, looks like a winner to me! I agree with you on the use of levels and/or curves. Standard operating procedure for me. 87 degrees is a cool night this time of year in Redding, but, hey, it's a dry heat! (Yeah right....) :-) #145234
