What a beautiful image Stephen! I love it in BW. Great composition. I especially like how the curve of the rock flows right into that wave in the lower left corner. Awesome! #1560806

Dale Hardin January 24, 2014

I like the comp also, Stephen but feel it has too much contrast. Would like to see the shadows opened up. #10955274

Jeff E Jensen January 24, 2014

I agree that the shadows could be opened a tad. Otherwise, print it and hang it on the wall. #10955317

Sherran Andersen level-classic January 24, 2014

Nice capture... would also like to see what it looks like with the shadows opened a tad. #10955331

Peter W. Marks January 25, 2014

I think I am agreeing with the others Stephen but being stuck here in the middle of this vast country on a dark very cold winter morning I am enjoying looking at the ocean again...... and dreamin'. #10955436

Something like this? #10955702

Dale Hardin January 25, 2014

A very subtle change, Stephen. Personally, I'd go for a bit more, but mask the water. It all boils down to the eye of the beholder, because it is a good photo no matter how you treat it. #10955736

Beth Spencer January 25, 2014

I love the composition of this picture! After driving home in white out conditions tonight, I am with Peter and love looking at the ocean and not snow drifts!
I like the mist on the rocks! #10955971

Stephen Shoff January 25, 2014

Retaining the mist on the rocks is one of the reasons I don't take Dale's adjustments as far as he is suggesting, Beth. I could, alternatively, dramatically brighten the upper half of the image and the mist would become very prominent. But then the cliffs wouldn't still appear backlit and the image becomes very flat and the surf undramatic.

Dale, I think this is one of those cases when BP's enforced small viewing size is a disservice to critiquing an image There is a lot more detail in the rocks that becomes visible when seen in even full-screen size let alone a print size. But I do think the suggestion improved the image. Thank you.

For those of you suffering so greatly from the cold and weather, here is an alternative view from a spot just down the bluffs from the original, and a chair and window view to place yourself in while you drink a morning cuppa'. #10956003

Dale Hardin January 25, 2014

I can see why you enjoyed being there so much, Stephen. The views are remarkable.

I believe you are correct in the reason the images suffer from BP compression. I've had the same experience and it often shows up as an "over sharpened" look when there is fine detail, and loss of shadow detail. #10956028

Elaine Hessler January 26, 2014

I agree-the picture is showing up a little pixilated, which I assume is from the BP compression. Ignoring the artifact, this is outstanding. I absolutely love this in black and white-I do like the shadows opened up too-I would have suggested this also.

The other pictures look so inviting-I would love to see these views!

Are you going to print this? #10956724

Stephen Shoff January 26, 2014

I do plan on printing this one, Elaine. If for no other reason than to see if it comes out as well as it seems it should. I'll probably enter it into my local club's print content just to get additional feedback.

Love the image but not a big fan of the black and white. when I look at the ocean I think Blue which you so graciously shared. Which gave me the feeling I was looking for. I would love to see it in color if you would like to share #10957412

Beth Spencer January 27, 2014

Stephen, this is indeed a beautiful spot! I will trade you some snow for some sun any day!
I really like the color one the tones are beautiful and I can almost feel the mist from the ocean. #10957616

Stephen Shoff January 27, 2014

Beth, I posted the color image with you and the mist in mind. I'm glad you like it. The other I posted for Peter.

Rita, here is the color original. #10957777

Dale Hardin January 27, 2014

Thanks for posting this, Stephen. I find that I like better than the bk and wht. #10957807

Debbie E. Payne January 28, 2014

Stephen - a wonderful black and white. I do like the shadows opened just as you did with your edit. It needs contrast and I think you've got it right. Too much more and it would change the feel completely. I need to address some black and whites myself. #10958954

Rita K. Connell level-classic January 29, 2014

Oh I so like the color one better. Its more inviting I love the feel the blue water brings to it. thank you for posting it. Love it! #10959448

Beth Spencer January 30, 2014

Thanks for sending some color my way! #10960628

And thank you, Beth, for sending some rain/snow my way. #10960664
