Description

This two-story brick company store building is at deserted Henry River Mill Village, near Catawba, North Carolina. The building served as a store and mill office, with the upper floor used as a school room and for church services from 1907-1917. The mill had produced fine combed cotton yarn for use in making lace. the 72-acre village was more recently the filming location of many scenes of the 2012 film The Hunger Games, known in the film as District 12.

This is a beautiful old structure. I found this old building a couple of years before the movie when I made a wrong turn off the interstate. I traveled that route twice per year for work and would look for it on each trip. Finally I found it and it was only a few days after filming finished. The movie had not been released and I didn't know one had been made. A car stopped as I shot the area. I thought I was "busted" but as it turned out, the thought I was a part of the film crew. We had been shooting nearby Murray's Mill (another nearby beautiful structure) and the girl working at the general store there told us about Henry River Mill Village. It was sure worth the small detour, #10822994
