Crested Caracara

Uploaded: March 27, 2013

Description

Taken at Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. A bit of info about these birds: Found from Baja California to eastern Texas, south to Panama. Preferred habitats include prairies, savannas, desert scrub, and seashores. They are found around the Orlando area; the subspecies in Florida is known as Audubon's Crested Caracara; it is present year-round. There are only 250 pairs of this federally threatened subspecies nesting in Florida. Although it looks like a long-legged hawk and associates with vultures, it is actually in the same family as falcons.

Beautiful Capture of a very handsome Raptor.
Have seen several while driving the Turnpike between Kissimmee & Palm Beach and several at the Vero Wetland .

A magnificent portrait, Carol! In fact, I see these occasionally in my stomping grounds of Central Texas and saw one this morning feeding on road-kill. They are beautiful birds, quite eye-catching. Your portrait is tack-sharp! A nice display of your talent! #10626919

Thank you Jeff, Jack, Brian and Jim! Jack, amazing that you have seen them in the wild, especially with so few of of them left in this area.

Jim, very fortunate that you have seen them in your area too. I wonder if they are as rare there as in FL? And road-kill, yuck! #10629902
