Buzz Pollination

Uploaded: June 13, 2012

Description

Along with bumble bee queens, carpenter bees are the largest native bees in the U.S.

They get their name from excavating precisely rounded galleries inside wood.

Carpenter bees are early morning foragers. They land on flower blossoms and become living tuning forks. Using their powerful thoracic muscles they sonicate the dry pollen grains out of the flower’s anthers. This type of pollen gathering is called “buzz pollination.” Carpenter bees are excellent pollinators of eggplant, tomato and other vegetables and flowers.

Pictured is a carpenter bee 'buzz pollinating' a Stella d'Oro Daylily.

Have a 'Buzzy' Day!!<:))
