I am working on a 2013 All American pin up Calendar. This is Miss July! #1455259

Rita K. Connell level-classic April 08, 2012

how cute is that Sue, I really like it. I like it as is! tell us more about your calender? #10081275

Sue C. Cole April 08, 2012

Thank you Rita! I have always been inspired by the 40's - 70's pin ups and thought I would like to do an all american pin up calendar with a modern twist. I'm hoping to have this available for the 1213 year. I'm also thinking of using this as a way to raise money for Cure JM. Too help find a cure for my grand daughters decease. following are two more possiblities. If you can think of any ideas to be added as an ALL American idea and don't mind sharing let me know. I also plan to have a letter carrier as a pin up. #10081456

Anthony L. Mancuso April 08, 2012

I like all 3 Sue..great job re-creating the pin-up look of the past with the make up and costuming. Did you do all that your self?

On the first post there is a shadow on the left just below her knee and extending to the left edge I think I would white out. Have you considered going for a desaturated look to add to the old fashioned feel? #10081532

Jeff E Jensen April 08, 2012

Excellent work on all three, Sue! #10081680

Sue C. Cole April 08, 2012

Thanks Tony and Jeff, I didn't notice the shadow but do now:) Tony, what a great idea about a desaturated look, I will have to try that. The mu and costume is a combined effort with the models and my daughter that helps with our business. We will be adding these to our fb page when they are available to vote on and the winner will recieve a spot in the calendar, along with a free calendar and images of their entire shoot for their participation. You can see them @ http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lifelong-Photography-Sue-Cole/484610190720 #10081726

Stephen Shoff April 08, 2012

Looks like its going to be a great calendar. You're doing well at recreating the "look". #10081809

Dale Hardin April 09, 2012

Great project and beautifully done Sue. I'm a big fan of vintage images and the 40's look and have done some myselft.

Here is the link to a tutorial that may help speed up your process. It is essentualy an automated way to dodge and burn your highlights and shadows. And in the 40's look, there was not a lot of detail but strong variations on shadows and highlight and colors.

As far as ideas, you might consider the modern business woman, and of course the athletes and service people such as waitresses and stewardess. #10082535

Debbra Bailey April 09, 2012

Ohhh, I love these! Great idea!! #10082660

Aimee C. Eisaman April 09, 2012

Great idea....and you know I'd love it! :~) I actually like your other two posts better than the first one. The energy of the girl in the first one is just great, but I'm not a fan of the use of the American flag in that way. To me it gives more of a feel that she is trying to cover up...not enhance the theme of the shot. Other than that I think the editing is wonderful! #10082745

Carla Capra Anderson April 09, 2012

These shots are amazing. At first glance and without reading your comments I would have suggested reducing the skin softening. However, it does work with that pin up era. Love your lighting. Would you mind sharing how you lighted this? Great project and great results. #10083014

Peter W. Marks April 09, 2012

Girl on a dropped-bar racing bicycle. Not too much cleavage Sue, I over-heat rather easily!

Tennis girl waiting for the service. Ditto the above!

How about a girl driver with an 18-wheeler big-rig? Not sure how I would pose her. #10083020

Sue C. Cole April 09, 2012

Dale, Thank you, I will check the link out sounds like something I would love to use in this. and thanks for the ideas I hadn't thought of that set of pin ups (other then the athletics, by incorporating, baseball-apple pie and chevrolate:)

Debbie- Thank you!

Aimee- I love this kind of shooting, I get so wrapped up in this kind of photography I think the models feel I'm a little wacked out:) but they always come back...hehehe.

Carla- Thank you! I do tend to go a little over on my softening even when they are not in the pinup era so your comment would not surprise me:). I used two strobs in my studio one with a diffuser and one with an umbrella.

Peter- I love the bicycle idea and I actually have a 1950's vintage bicycle the only problem is, it's a European bike not sure that will work with All American. I love the girl driver in the big rig idea too, I think it would be cool to frame her in the back of the truck...hmm now to find someone with a big rig that will be the challenge. I can't promise Not too much cleavage though.:)

Thanks again for your support #10083077

Peter W. Marks April 09, 2012

Heck Sue, I think this old goat is warming to the subject. I was watching corn being sowed just across the lane form our front drive earlier today. The driver was enclosed in his air conditioned cab and was a guy but how about a good ol' southern girl in her daisy-dukes leaning against the vintage John Deere or Farmall?
Just a thought Sue, can I volunteer to be the art-director at your shoots and pose these lovelies? lol

Sue C. Cole April 09, 2012

Excellent Idea and I do know where I can come up with an old tractor. LOL Come on down Peter and join the line! :) #10083189

Ellen H. Robertson level-classic April 10, 2012

Sue, what a great idea. These are wonderful. Love the old tractor idea, what do you think about vintage car or pickup.

These will make money for your Cure JM. #10084778

Michael Kelly level-deluxe April 10, 2012

Wonderful Sue! All I can add is that everything looks very professional. I don't think a high end magazine could have done any better. This is all so very creative and well executed. #10084867

Debbie E. Payne April 11, 2012

Sue, I am so proud of what you are doing with this calendar. It is very professional looking and it will really showcase your unique talent. Truly a work of love for Cure JM.

I'm thinking about a scene with one of your lovely models and a old tub and washboard washing clothes - maybe August. #10086695

Sue C. Cole April 12, 2012

Ellen, Michael and Debbie thank you so much for your wonderful and encouraging comments. This is truely the love of my photography and the love of my grand daughter brings my heart to the table with this one for sure. I really love your Idea Debbie, I never thought of that one but how perfect. I have the tractor, bicyle, letter carrier and wash tub and waitress all I need a four more. Thanks again guys.:) #10087101

Peter W. Marks April 12, 2012

And there just has to be a girl with a Harley- colorful bandana, unzipped leather biker jacket.
Oh stop it Peter, it's only 8am here and now you have to take a second shower! #10087108

Debbie E. Payne April 12, 2012

Have you got someone carving a pumpkin? Or someone drinking green beer for March? The ideas just keep popping into my head. #10087270

Dale Hardin April 12, 2012

And don't forget the lawyer. There always has to be a bad girl in the bunch. :o) #10087308

Sue C. Cole April 12, 2012

OK Peter, I will do the Harley gal just for you...but....don't forget you said not to much clevage in your ealier post. I don't think I can promise that with a Harley. I do have a lot of harley friends and I know just the right gal:)

Love the pumpkin idea Debbie for sure and Dale the lawyer bad girl well ;) yeap. I'm excited to get this thing going. #10087646

Beth Spencer April 12, 2012

Teresa H. Hunt April 13, 2012

These are really great! I've always loved the pin-up style. I can't wait to see what else you come up with. :) #10089224

Teresa H. Hunt April 13, 2012

Hey, what about a girl with a vintage camera? :) #10089226

Dale Hardin April 13, 2012

I have a vintage camera and would be willing to hold it for the model. :o) #10089359

Teresa H. Hunt April 13, 2012

LOL!!! Dale you are too funny :) #10089621

Sue C. Cole April 13, 2012

Great Idea Teresa, that is for sure a must, LOL Dale. Well maybe if you come over for your class reunion we might beable to work that out;) I havn't talked to Roy Lee yet to see if he is going but he has an old vintage camera from germany. It may just be the perfect fit. There have been so many awesome ideas with this thread, I may have to do a follow up calendar:) #10089736

Peter W. Marks April 14, 2012

And inspiration is still coming Sue. I was working out at the university fitness center yesterday and seeing some of those young lovelies on the various exercise machines made me think of your project. If you have access to somewhere similar one could fill a calendar with poses that might even get old vintage Dale's mind off ancient cameras. Now there's a theme for the following year's calendar with Dale's spindly old antique legs sticking out beneath the black cloth of his plate camera as the cover shot. :0)
We love you Dale; may your bellows never perish! #10090233

Rita K. Connell level-classic April 14, 2012
