East Atrium Connecticut State Capitol

Uploaded: November 14, 2011

Description

The Connecticut State Capitol building was erected in the years 1872-1878. It is one of the largest Eastlake Style buildings in existence. The exterior is East Canaan, Connecticut marble and granite from Westerly, Rhode Island. The building is roughly rectangular; the interior spaces organized around two open interior courts that run vertically to large skylights. In the center is a third circular open rotunda beneath the dome.

Within the East Atrium you will find the statue of Nathan Hale, the young patriot who, while a captain on General George Washington's Revolutionary War army, was captured by the British in Queens, New York, convicted of spying and hanged at age 21 years.

Also see the close up of Nathan Hale's statue found here in my Hartford, Connecticut Landmarks Gallery. This photo is a large panorama of the East Atrium.
