I am sure some of you will remember this one... I had edited it quit a bit, and it was actually a pick for one of Jim's books, but I don't think I signed the forms. Anyway, I must have accidentally deleted it, so decided to put it up again... sans edits. #1418907

What is she doing out in the middle of the road Joan? #9770548

Jeff E Jensen October 29, 2011

How dare you drive down her road!

I actually like this as presented. #9770604

Joan - I do such BAD cows that I really appreciate seeing what good cow images look like. She has an "attitude" and I like how she is placed in the image. The telephone poles add to the POV and I'd definitely keep all of that in. I did notice slight banding, but don't know how you'd go about getting rid of that and for me, replacing the sky would be rather difficult but entirely possible if you wanted to spend a lot of time on this image...Unless, of course, some of our Layer experts can advise... #9770658

Dale Hardin October 29, 2011

Sorry Debbie. Afraid she is stuck with that sky. #9770704

Joan E. Hoffman October 29, 2011

I think she was playing chicken. She just came sauntering down the centre of the road and stopped right in front of us. We actually had to drive around her.

Yes I wish the sky were better as well, however, if Dale says I am stuck with it, so be it!

I think it did well the first time, because I used a sepia filter on it, which diminished the effect of the blah sky. However, I liked this cow, and missed having her in my gallery.

Debbie, I loved your 007. Such a gormless looking critter, It made me laugh whenever I looked at it. #9771064

Joan - I'd have to go way back to find that one. I may see if I can do something with it now.

I don't know how many of the Phellos have tried to shoot cows, but they are a real tough subject for some reason. I think you did a great job Joan. Take another look at Dale's post and I think you will see how you might approach the sky issue.

Hope you are doing OK. Nice to see you back in the swing. #9771351

Beth Spencer October 29, 2011

I like #6! Maybe she was looking for a ride to avoid a ride to the beef factory or she was trying to run away to California to the Happy Cows!
I think she looks cool standing in the middle of the road and think you did a good job with her.
Hope you are doing well! #9771403

Ah, ha....I knew Dale had something up hid sleeve! #9771523

Debbie E. Payne October 29, 2011

That's supposed to be an "s" in hid. But in a way, he did hide something up his sleeve. Oh well. I give up, it's time for bed. #9771525

Great image, Joan.
#6's eyes are very expressive and don't you just wander what was rolling around in that mind of her's...standing in the road like that, lol.

I just love the connection with the animal in this image. I feel like I could have a conversation. Yes I have been known to talk to animals that don't talk back. I also talk to furniture when I run into it. lol The texture on the beast and the road are great, but I do think whatever filter you used did a number on the sky. If you recalled which filter you used and still had the original you could simply apply the effect on a separate layer and erase it from the background. Dale did a nice job of replacing the sky and keeping all the other background elements. You could also do a sky replacement and just remove everything other than the cow and the road. A cool shot for sure! :~) #9774157

Joan E. Hoffman October 31, 2011

Okay, I tried a sky replacement.... not sure how well it turned out, but here it is. #9774383

Teresa H. Hunt October 31, 2011

Ha Ha! This one makes me laugh!

That cow isn't going to move is she.

I like your sky replacement. #9774439

Joan E. Hoffman October 31, 2011

What IS it about cows that make us laugh?? I find the sky replacement really changes the image, I am growing used to it. Thought I would try Aimee's suggestion of remove all the poles as I have not done a replacement for a couple of years. Although I miss the the poles, I don't miss the blah sky. #9774457

Peter W. Marks October 31, 2011

I don't even want to think about her hitching a lift to a beef factory so I'm going with the happy Cows, CA.
And yes I like cows too Aimee but I am not publically going to admit I hold conversations with them! You might be giving too much away about yourself, but it explains a lot to me! :0)
Here is your friend #6's cousin over in Cornwall Joan.

I do like the new sky although it needs a bit of blur along the edges of where the forground layer meets the sky background.

Glad I could give you a bit more understanding of me Peter! lol :P #9774626

Dale Hardin October 31, 2011

The sky replacement works but it is too bright for the available light and looks replaced. Try reducing the opacity about 50% and blur the edge of the ground where it meets the sky. A gradient on the sky so that it is darker at the top would also help.

Also without the telephone poles your comp is compromised but reducing the sky in half would improve the over all look.

LOL! This bovine is probably wondering why she is getting so much attention. 'cause she's a sweetheart, that's why. #9774747

Joan E. Hoffman October 31, 2011

Thank you Peter, my cow is very happy to meet your cow, but is wondering why she isn't wandering the roads, free as a bird.

I tried the blur tool Aimee, but I can't see any significant difference. Course I am as blind as a bat.

Dale, yes I realized after it was a bad choice of skys, but I was more looking to see if I could actually do a sky replacement. I will do that, and try the suggested crop. I miss my poles though, but for me they are impossible to deal with!

Thank you all for your comments and also your kindness and support. I haven't felt much like taking my camera out, since John died, but I did for a bit one day. I am finding, though, that re-editing older shots, (using a bit more discretion than I had used prior, thanks to everything I have learned from all of you), has helped me take my mind away from where it would probably be, if I allowed it too.

Maybe the settings for it were too low....at least you tried it. You never know until you try. :~) #9776456
