Many thanks guys! This is for Tammy and anyone else that's interested. This particular image was shot at f 11.0 1/200 sec 70-200 w/ 1.7 teleconverter, effective mm 340 cropped like crazy! But my settings are probably all over the place, usually around f 9-11 with as fast a shutter as I can get. ISO usually around 200-400. I want the bg as soft as possible.
Dragonflies will typically fly off and return to the same spot. Not this guy though. He was probably the most skittish. Some will actually let you get pretty close. ( I've used my 105 as well.)
I do not try to hand-hold lens, so a tripod is a must for me. I also attempt to maneuver slightly so that his wings are clearly visible in as uncluttered a bg as possible. You must be patient. I spent a lot of time slowly crawling around on my knees.
Dragonflies get active when the sun is up so they are a great subject for sunny days. I hope that helps!

Excellent comp, detail and lighting! #9576617Danny B. Head August 02, 2011
Beautiful capture, Courtenay! I tried all weekend to get some good shots of the dragonflies down by the lake. I tried my 70-200 f 2.8 Nikon lens (no Macro) but the results were not as good as my old Sigma 70-200 f 2.8 macro. On Sunday, I switched to the 105mm f 2.8 w/ the 1.7 converter, but the dragonflies didn't want to be still enough as the did the first day... so maybe later. lol #9576632Bojan Bencic August 02, 2011
