Ants on my plants!

Uploaded: April 21, 2011

Description

Contrary to popular lore, there is no symbiotic relationship between ants and peonies. Peonies do not need the ants to help them bloom but ants do enjoy the sweet nectar the buds exude.

Great focus on the ant! My grandmother who passed away at age 94, loved peonies and had a garden full. She sold flowers (for almost nothing) from her garden to help make ends meet. Several years after she passed away, someone brought me peonies and told me they had bought them from her years ago and wanted me to have some. They grown each spring and are a nice reminder of her. #9361350

Super macro, Courtenay! You're right, the ants sure love those peonies! Somebody suggested carrying a can of compressed air to blow bugs off flowers you want to photograph, and I'm going to do just that when the peonies start blooming in our park! #9361463
