I'd like to add a bit more about this little gosling. I happened to arrive at the cemetery where I had been keeping an eye on the nest, just in time to see movement and a hole beginning to appear in the egg. The other goslings had already hatched the day before and this was the one remaining egg that did hatch. The other egg that you see underneath the mom was destroyed. So I stayed for the entire event, taking photos of the process from start to finish. What a great morning! Just to add one more bit of information, the mother and day old babies ended up leaving this little one behind but the story has a happy ending. The gosling was taken to the SPCA and consequently adopted and is living a happy life on a Western NY farm.
