Mongoose in Okinawa, Japan

Uploaded: January 25, 2011

Description

The Mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) was brought from India to Okinawa, Japan in the early 1900s to control the poisonous snakes named, Habu.
The problem with that idea is a mongoose feeds during daylight hours but, the snakes are nocturnal. This is a classic example of humans destroying wildlife by upsetting the balance of nature.
Mongoose feeding on frogs, birds and eggs have caused many species to become endangered on the islands of Okinawa. The mongoose is now considered an invasive species.
