POTD - Pre-Decimal Days

Uploaded: August 18, 2005

Description

I learned to type on this old typewriter, too many years ago. My Dad had bought it several decades before that! Australia's currency was pounds, shillings and pence until 1966, when we switched to dollars and cents. EF-S 60mm macro lens.

Well done on POTD Robyn!

... I can remember the old coinage too...
£1 = 8 half crowns or 10 florins or 20 shillings (bobs) or 40 sixpences (tanners) or 80 threepences (joeys) or 240 pennies or 480 halfpennies or 960 farthings... once learned never forgotten eh? Thanks for the trip down memory lane ~ LOL!

Wow! I certainly never expected a POTD, and am absolutely thrilled to get it!!

Thanks very much, Patty and Susan. Now Susan, let's get this currency thing straight - 12 pence to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pound, 21 shillings to the sovereign. A sixpence was a zac as well as a tanner. Arithmetic was a nightmare! The only thing I miss about those coins was that you could cook them in the Christmas pudding! #1869168

Boy that has brought back lots of memories. A question?, could 21 shillings have been a guinea( don't know how to spell it!!) & 5 shillings a sovereign??? Liked your pictures of Melbourne, makes me want to visit again. Keep up the good work=^..^= #1869763

Robyn Mackenzie September 23, 2005

Thank you EVERYONE for your kind comments!
Chris: Of course, you're right - 21 shillings is a guinea, not a sovereign. My aged memory is playing tricks on me! I think a sovereign is a gold coin equivalent of a pound (but I could be wrong...) :o) #1870012

Elisabeth A. Gay September 23, 2005

I remember those days in the UK too Robyn!! Great POTD! congratulations.
PS I'll never forget that the day before decimalisation a chocolate bar cost 6d. The next day it cost 6p - the catch was 6d was half a shilling, and 6p was a bit more than a shilling!! #1870083
