Vicki, Linda, Charlene and Colette... Thanks for you comments! FYI... I've heard that after registration day, the Knobs are not allowed to walk on the checkerboard square for the rest of their first year. They have to walk around the edges of the courtyard which is of course longer. Glad y'all like the photo! #1730965

Paul Conlan September 07, 2005

Thanks again for all the comments. The "Knobs" are first year cadets (college freshmen) who are treated like low-lifes much of their first year. Especially the first few weeks. The increase in status over the years at the Citadel as the prove themselves academically and leadership-wise. The first year they actually cannot walk on the sidewalks around campus but have a little walking lane in the gutter. That kind of thing. This barracks is one of about six there. It is the largest and was remodeled just a couple years ago. I'm going to try and attach a photo that shows more of the building so you can get a better feel for it. I have two other images in the Gallery B - Latest Images at my BP website. You can't miss them. I was standing on the fourth floor colonnade looking down the stairs to the courtyard. No elevators! Ha... Thanks again and best wishes to all. #1810516

September 07, 2005

What an interesting viewpoint. The image conveys an atmosphere of the sanitised environment totally ordered with rules and regulations, nothing out of line and with no leeway for individual expression. I notice that the table is perfectly on the diagonal.

The term 'knobs' is interesting. In this country it refers to the 'top brass' (or maybe that is an idiomatic term too!? #1811698

Paul Conlan September 07, 2005

Thank you to the latest group of commentators. I appreciate your feedback and kind words on my photo. I'd say your assessment Jill is pretty accurate. The relationship between giving up ones individuality in many ways to become a part of a highly ordered and effective team… and eventually a leader... is pretty interesting. I’m not sure of the derivation of the term “Knobs” but I think it refers to their shaven heads. The use of the word in your country is much more impressive! I'll have to email my son and let him know. Best wishes to all... #1811963
