Description

The beauty of an Australian native Tripladenia cunninghamii (Bush Lily) caught on stage in the spotlight beam of dappled forest light.

Canon EOS 40D & Canon 28-135 USM IS Lens: RAW, f/5.6 @ 1/125sec, 115mm, ISO 100, Hand held.

THE MAKING OF 'On Stage':

My best Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mate and I were out on a Saturday safari at Kattang on the lookout for flowers, bugs or fungi to add to our collection.
We had done the Flowerbowl Circuit with little success so decided to head out towards the point to see if our luck would change. It sure did!
First we came across a newly emerged Cicada, then many of these Bush Lilies and finally a large and interesting Bolete fungus.
This single bloom really caught my eye as it stood bathing in the fleeting light shining through the forest canopy.
I wanted to keep the spotlight effect including the shadow so flash was out of the question. As my lens only opens up to f/5.6 at the focal length I had to use, I used the camera's Spot metering to ensure the flower was properly exposed and let the shadows look after themselves. I did not have to worry though as the subdued shadows made a great contrast as well as adding to the 'on stage' effect I was after. Only minor tweaking during processing for this one.

Enjoy!
