Ricketts Rainbow

Ricketts Glen State Park, PA
Last Wednesday I finished taking two photographers on a tour of this park. We started in May with an 8-hour tour of the east fork, and finished with a 7-hour hike along the west fork. This park has over 30 waterfalls. This one had a bit of a rainbow, so I shot it.

Beautiful capture Marty!Mitch Spence October 28, 2010
Although the thought of that seven hour hike makes my muscles twinge in empathy, it was surely worth it just to get this shot. The light here is wonderful. #9001760Jeff Robinson October 28, 2010
Great perspective and capture Marty!! Jeff #9001825Tammy M. Anderson October 28, 2010

I do a lot of walking, but even I would balk at 7 hours, especially in that terrain! That said, this sure is a beautiful waterfall -- the rainbow is really neat! #9002023Jack Ryan October 28, 2010
Definitely a long time on the trail, but this beautiful image...complete with rainbow...makes it all worth the effort. So very well done, Marty...glad you were there!!! #9002055Maria A. Gonzalez October 28, 2010

I sure admire your stamina, Marty - 7 hours of hiking! I'm afraid the paramedics would've had to been called to stretcher me out after hour 5!!! But what a spectacular waterfall capture and the rainbow was the perfect bonus for your herculean effort...7 hours - my leg muscles are on fire just thinking about it! :) #9002535Ellen Hodges October 28, 2010
Marty, this a verrrrrrrrry superb shot in my humble opinion!!!!! Just toooo gorgeous! Love the rainbow, too!!! #9002658Marty Straub October 29, 2010
Thanks everyone! We only walked like 4 1/2 miles so you can see there were a lot of stops, and we parked at the top and had a car at the bottom so it was all down hill. T'aint no big deal; y'all coulda made it. Stretch before, during and after. The only reason it took so long was because these were old film photogs. #9003192Julianne Bradford November 02, 2010
What an awesome image Marty!! Cute remark about how long it took because of the film photographers :-) I don't think they could do these beautiful falls any more justice than you have with this remarkable image! I hiked downhill in Arizona recently and I still felt "the burn" :-) #9010951Dianna Murphy November 04, 2010
Wow 30 waterfalls, must of been so exciting. This is gorgeous. #9014774Denny E. Barnes November 07, 2010

Marty- Now this is right out of the pages of what paradise looks like. You even got a rainbow, how fantasstic is that! One of the most gorgeous waterfall scenes I have seen. The tiering of the rocks and the water that washes over them, the beuatiful job you did of capturing tht action, then the colors so pretty. what amazing work my friend. Stunning.Marty Straub November 16, 2010
Thanks, you guys. Wonderful motivation. Jo Ann, I LOVE that question and think we should be asking those kinds of questions of each other more often. A great way to learn. I almost always (in landscapes anyway) try to get as much within the frame in focus as possible, and the f/16 opening is often my choice. This scene, however, could have been done at an f/6 with at least as good of results, but it was cropped to 2444 on the long side from 5616. The original exposure intended to have more elements that required more depth of field ~hence the f/16. This version was cropped because I wanted to concentrate on the rainbow. #9041283Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
