Thank you Shirley,Joy,Lem,Ruth,Lorraine, and Ms.Patricia...I need to work on these type shots...I always lose something...I get one part right then lose something on another part...like I said I need to work on it...any suggestions are aprreciated!:~% #90549

Nice shot Suzie! I think this shot works well the way it is but I assume you were talking about getting more shadow detail without blowing out the highlights. I did a 30 sec rework on your shot. If thats' what you had in mind I can tell you how to do it, although I'm not so sure it made it any better in this case because I like the mood of your original with maybe a little more crop off the right side. #90590

Suzie is on the mystical tour at the moment...LOL. I'll post a special one for you tomorrow.
I like the image just as it was taken. This is of course a difficult lighting situation, sometimes a neutral grey filter helps, I also use a gradual grey to avoid overexposed skies.
I think the crucial point is to pass on the mood and you managed that very well!

Wonderful shot, Suzie, love the sun rays through the trees! #90645

Suzie Strasburg May 26, 2019

Well thank you guys...I like what you did Carl and would like to know how?....Thank you so much! W-D I do have a problem with trying to tone down the glare in the sky I'm not sure how to do a gradual gray(without messing up the whole pix)...Please share....thank you again!!!. Ellen thank you for your wonderful comments of the sun rays!!!:~)) #90656

With this photo the gradual grey would not be of great advantage. It is a filter you use in front of the lenses of your camera. I have a special adapter to be able to move the filter up and down as to have a choice of how much grey I want. I can also turn the filter. If I have bright sky and dark foreground, the sky will be totally burnt out if I meter against the foreground. Doing it the other way, the sky will be okay, but the foreground much too dark. in this situation I use the gradual grey with the grey part against the sky and the transparent part against the foreground. I hope that explains.

Very nice, Suzie. I liked the mood in the original, which you might alter if you lighten the dark areas.

I think everyone agrees this particular photo works as is since overall mood overrides perfect shadow exposure. The only way to expose this correctly "in camera' is as birdie suggests and use a graduated neutral density filter to tone down the highlights while exposing for the shadows. This is one of those extreme lighting shots that can only be exposed about as well as you have without a filter. As for bringing out shadow detail after the fact, my favorite technique is "loading or selecting highlights" in PS with Alt+control+~ (Opt+command+~ in Mac) and then inverting selection. Copy this to a new layer and change the blend mode of the new layer to screen or just play with the curves of that layer. Sometimes I go a little past what I think looks good and then play with the opacity to fine tune it. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need a little more clarification. #90675
