Hi Duncan, I just used an old SB-24 flash and I had strong sunlight coming from a large window behind me. I used a very short burst from the flash because I had all the sunlight behind me. I think the trick was having lots of natural light. I also aimed the flash at the ceiling to make it a bit softer. After that though, I did take the contrast up and the brightness down in photoshop.
