Sunset on the Great Wall

Uploaded: December 01, 2006

Description

Nikon D50 with a 18-70mm. This was taken on the part of the Great Wall of China between Jinshanling and Sumatai. If you look closely in the background you can see the wall ascend quite steeply from Sumatai. This part of the wall is largely very free of tourists and the walk from Jinshanling to Sumatai is about 10km taking about 4 hours with some steepish climbs. Highly recommended!

This is a magnificent scene..just about the best I have seen, Peter. The golden colors of the wall contrast so well with the darker landscape and the moon at the end is wonderful. GREAT JOB!!!!!!!! #565631

Fantastic capture, Peter. You have an excellent eye!

After being up on the China wall, I understand how steep and difficult the walk can be. You must be in excellent shape and that would explain in part why you can hand-hold your equipment.

Your work is amazing!

I had hoped that the Gitzo with the RRS head would help me make better images like these, but I guess I need to recover from my surgeries and get into better shape before considering.

Thanks for sharing your talent with the world. #3684405

Thanks for the lovely comment Kate. Actually it is the moon not the sun :-). It was a great experience. Walking for 10km along the wall without tourists was wonderful. #3857342

This may be a stretch, but if you look in the lower left corner of the picture at the last opening in the wall before the end of the picture, it almost looks like the ghost of a girl with hair cut short to her shoulders. The first time I saw this I thought there was someone there! Until I looked at it directly. #3893654

Peter R. Hammer August 03, 2008

Thanks Candice and Margaret. Sorry for the delay about the thanks Candice but I missed your comment. Margaret this image has done reasonably well in international and national competitions but no major gongs :-( The best placing has been a POTD here on BP. #6266365
